Funding for 3 and 4 year olds

All 3 to 4 year olds in England can get 570 hours of free early education or childcare per year. This is usually taken as 15 hours each week for 38 weeks of the year or less than 15 hours each week but over more weeks of the year – this is known as a stretched offer. If your child is receiving a stretched offer their maximum number of funded hours could be between 9 and 11.40 hours each week all depending on your childcare provider. Please also note:

  • Your child cannot have more than 570 funded hours per year in total
  • Your child can share the entitlement between two childcare providers but no more
  • If your child starts to attend a maintained school nursery he/she will already be getting their full entitlement so you cannot claim more hours with another childcare provider
  • Your child must attend the number of hours/sessions agreed with your childcare provider and that are being funded by the government
  • The Council checks to see if children are taking more than 570 hours each year
